Our Guiding Philosophy

MISSION: Classical martial arts, handed down through the centuries, are essentially peaceful.  According to Sun Tsu (The Art of War), the mark of true martial excellence is to win without fighting.  With the clarity of mind that comes from spiritual growth, combined with physical prowess, the true warrior can defeat an opponent’s strategy before violence occurs.  This is the ultimate goal of Junan Shorin Ryu.

OBJECTIVE:  To teach the ‘Do’ (way/art) and ‘Jitsu’ (fighting/self-defense) of Junan Shorin Ryu karate.  The curriculum is intended to provide a well-rounded martial arts education.

PRINCIPLES:  The curriculum is based on four core principles.

Caring: Regard coming from esteem.  The desire to see oneself – or another –  grow spiritually, mentally and physically.

Honesty:  Fairness and straightforwardness of conduct.  Free from fraud or deception.  Genuine.  Real.

Respect:  High or special regard for the life and health of oneself and others.  Recognizing that life has purpose and meaning and must, therefore, be treated with great care.

Responsibility:  Reliability.  Trustworthiness.  Able to answer for ones conduct and obligations.  Able to choose for oneself between right and wrong.

Ju Nan Shorin Ryu focuses on the total person in spirit, mind and body.

Spirit:  The pursuit of excellence via dedication to virtue and truth.

Mind:  Developing critical thinking skills by pursuing thoughtfulness and peace both internally and externally.

Body:  Strengthening the body through the study of technique and conditioning.
